The design of The Lakes Mall is derived from the area's history and environment, including the nearby shores of Lake Michigan. The style is rustic and reminiscent of a hunting lodge. The interiors and signage reflect the materials in the surrounding woods and lakes and include wildlife motifs. Designers chose the blue heron, a bird commonly seen along Michigan's Great Lakes, for the mall's logo.
"They took our location into consideration when planning the design, color scheme and logo so they would be representative of the community," says Connie Smith, supervisor of Fruitport Charter Township where the mall is located. She says the mall has acted as a catalyst, increasing property values and spurring new commercial and residential development in the surrounding areas.
